3. Categories of data, purposes and legal bases

3.1 Server log files

When you visit our website, our hosting provider automatically processes technical information in server log files. This may include your IP address, date and time of access, URL accessed, referrer URL, browser type, operating system and user-agent information.

We process this data to ensure the security and stability of the website and to detect and investigate misuse. The legal basis is our legitimate interest under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.

If you subscribe to our newsletter or become a member, we process your email address and, where provided, your name. We may also process the time and technical details of subscription, such as IP address and user-agent information, to document consent and prevent misuse.

We use this data to send the requested newsletter or member communications and to manage and document consent. The legal basis is your consent under Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR.

With your consent, we use Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use our website, measure readership, identify technical issues and improve our content and services.

These services may process technical and usage data, such as pages visited, interactions with the website, approximate location derived from IP address, device and browser information, referral source, session information and online identifiers. We do not use these tools to identify you directly.

Google Analytics is provided by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. Microsoft Clarity is provided by Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited, One Microsoft Place, South County Business Park, Leopardstown, Dublin 18, Ireland.

Where personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, the relevant provider uses appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, where required.

3.6 Verification, geolocation and anti-abuse protection for submissions

When you use our local submission features, we may process additional technical and submission-related data, including verification codes, verification status, approximate or exact location data that you actively provide or confirm, map coordinates, uploaded images or files, device/browser information, and anti-abuse/security data.

We process this data to verify authenticity, reduce spam and abuse, review local relevance, communicate with submitters, and decide whether and how a submission may be published. The legal bases are your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), the performance of pre-contractual/editorial review steps where applicable (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR), and our legitimate interests in secure platform operation, fraud prevention, and legal defence (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

If anti-bot or security verification services are used, the relevant provider may process technical connection data for abuse prevention and security purposes.

We use essential cookies and similar technologies that are necessary for the technical operation, security and core functions of the website. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing a secure and functional website under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.

5. Recipients and third-party services

We use service providers where necessary to operate Macro Micro News. These providers may act as processors on our behalf or, depending on the service, as independent controllers under data-protection law.

Hosting provider: 1blu AG, Riedemannweg 60, 13627 Berlin, Germany. Our Ghost CMS and related services are hosted on our VPS infrastructure.
Analytics providers: Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity, only where you have consented to analytics.
Security and anti-abuse services: Cloudflare Turnstile may process technical connection information to protect forms and submissions from abuse.
Newsletter/member services: Ghost CMS may process data needed for newsletter and member functions where these services are enabled.
Payment providers: if subscriptions, donations or other payments are enabled, the applicable payment provider will process payment data as an independent controller for payment execution and fraud prevention.

Where providers process personal data outside the European Economic Area, transfers take place subject to an adequacy decision, Standard Contractual Clauses or another valid transfer mechanism, where required.

6. Retention periods

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary for the relevant purpose or as required by legal retention obligations.

Server log files are generally retained for a limited period and then deleted or anonymised, subject to security and legal requirements.
Newsletter and member data is retained until you unsubscribe or close your account, plus a reasonable period where necessary to document consent or meet legal obligations.
Submission data may be retained for up to two years after the associated content is unpublished, unless a longer period is required for legal obligations, disputes or legal claims.
Contact enquiries are retained for as long as needed to handle the enquiry and for a limited follow-up period.
Cookie-consent preferences are retained in your browser so that we can remember your choice.
