Compare that to Pope Francis’ *Laudato Si’*, which placed the Earth at the very center of moral life. That document called us to see the world not as a problem to be solved, but as a joyful mystery to be contemplated. *Magnifica Humanitas* takes a different path. It frames humans as builders, makers, creators. It celebrates our ability to shape the world. But it forgets that we can’t shape a world that’s no longer habitable.
This isn’t just a theological debate. It’s a practical one. Without a stable climate, all the AI ethics in the world are meaningless. Sensational headlines about robot takeovers and existential risk generate clicks and attention, while the slow moving disaster of climate change fades into the background. It’s a pattern we’ve seen before. From nuclear winter fears in the 80s to the Y2K panic in the 90s, big crises have a way of capturing the spotlight while quieter, more persistent threats go unnoticed. The current AI frenzy follows the same script.
But there’s a way forward. The tradition of integral ecology, first laid out in *Laudato Si’*, offers a powerful framework. It says that human well being, social justice, and environmental health are all connected. You can’t separate them. Applied to AI, this means asking different questions. Does this technology serve human dignity? Does it strengthen our connection to the Earth? Does it help us care for each other and the world around us? Or does it pull us further into a digital bubble, away from the living, breathing reality we depend on?
The answers aren’t hard to find. AI, as it’s currently built, tends to disconnect. It turns complex life into data points. It replaces face to face conversation with algorithmic mediation. It encourages endless consumption over quiet contemplation. These aren’t bugs. They’re features of a system designed for extraction and scale.
So what do we do? We don’t throw out the technology. But we do need to see it clearly. *Magnifica Humanitas* is a step in the right direction, but it’s not the final word. It’s part of a larger conversation that must include the climate crisis as a central, non negotiable priority. The future isn’t about building smarter machines. It’s about remembering how to live wisely on a fragile, beautiful planet. As the Pope himself reminds us, the Earth is not ours to exploit. It’s a gift. And the real test of our civilization isn’t how advanced our algorithms become. It’s whether we can still feel the wind on our skin, hear the rain on the roof, and honor the breath of life that connects us all.
